"Looking back to the future."
"The Māori Contingent – (Pioneer Māori Battalion)
I tū te Māori ki te Pakanga Nui o te Ao I te raenga kuiti o Gallipoli, me nga whenua pakanga o WiiWii, hei whakatu i te kaha me te toa o te Māori.
During the "The Great War", Māori fought on the Gallipoli Peninsula and on the battlefields of France, distinguishing themselves as brave warriors on all fronts.”
It also goes on to display the 28th NZ Maori Battalion, WW2. This exhibition will continue to develop as more people come forward with family stories and artefacts. We are especially interested in A Company.
This display is in conjunction with the recently installed WW1 centennial commemorative exhibition "The Great War 1914/1918 – Northland Remembers" the. This exhibition will stand for a 4 year period, until late 2018.
As always there is a beautiful selection of the Taonga collection displayed, a core collection of the Whangarei Museum.
