Matariki is a time of gathering together around the fire and whiling away the long cold nights and time of relative inactivity with storytelling. It is a time for whakawhanaungatanga, a time celebrating and passing on the tales of the whanau, a time for looking back in respect and forwards in hope. It is in this backdrop that the story of Hoki mai Tama Mā is set.
Originally commissioned for the 2013 Matariki Festival of Arts this one act piece was presented over a three night season in conjunction with The Pumphouse. Directed by Tainui Tukiwaho and Gerald Urquhart the cast included Regan Taylor, Tainui Tukiwaho and Keporah Ashby. Performances were followed by Q & A sessions which yielded positive and constructive feedback regarding story and art form for us to take into the third draft.
