The call is out for events to make this year’s Matariki Festival, coordinated by Whangarei District Council’s Venues and Events Team, the best so far.
This year Matariki will coincide with the DHL New Zealand Lions Series 2017, the first game of which will be held in Whangarei.
“We are expecting a huge number of national and international visitors, so we are keen to show them a really good time, showcase our hospitality and culture, and give people more to come here for than just one game,” said Councillor Cherry Hermon - Chair of WDC’s Community Development Committee.
“We want to fill the programme with as many events as we can, and not just those in Whangarei. We are keen to hear about events from across Northland.
“The festival’s star event, the Matariki Whanau Festival will be held on Saturday 17 June at the Town Basin, rain date Saturday 24 June, and promises an outstanding cultural experience for visitors from all over.”
Cr Hermon said Matariki is the star system that begins to rise in the last few days of May, and symbolises the coming of the Maori New Year.
“It’s a time to celebrate with family and friends, show manaakitanga and make new friends.
“Last year’s Matariki Festival was bigger than ever with our community running cultural events, exhibitions and festivals, and this year we want to make it even bigger, richer and brighter.
“Our events team will collect the information people send in, and collate it into a free promotional booklet. They will add them to the Matariki Festival Facebook page, advertise them on the radio, list them in the Whangarei Leader and on our Venues and Events Whangarei What’s On page, free of charge.

“It’s our way of contributing to the festival, by pulling all the information together for them, and coordinating the publicity.
“So, if you have an event planned for Matariki, make sure festival organisers know about it and can work hard to promote it for you.”
“We are calling for all ideas and plans for the Matariki Festival taking place in June or July, whether they be cultural, arts, exhibition or educational events. Get in touch with us!” Event listings should be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org by Friday 17 March.
