Whangarei District Council’s General Manager, Community, Sandra Boardman has been appointed to the Rugby World Cup 2021 (RWC2021) Organising Committee along with eight others, and Committee chairperson Dame Julie Christie.

Mrs Boardman’s portfolio of responsibilities at Council includes the Venues and Events team who run Semenoff Stadium which will be the venue for some pool matches and a quarter final in the RWC2021.

Prior to joining Council Sandra had a 34 year career in the health sector, initially as a hospital pharmacist and then as a manager in both the UK and New Zealand.

This included executive roles at both Taranaki and Southern District Health Boards. Sandra has an MBA from Durham University and is a member of the New Zealand Institute of Directors.

Mrs Boardman said this is the first time the tournament will be held in the Southern Hemisphere and the organisers are committed to successfully hosting this elite women’s tournament in New Zealand.

“We were very pleased that our joint bid with Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED) to host games was accepted. Our region will provide players and visitors with the best New Zealand has to offer – a warm climate, stunning scenery and one of the largest selections of things to do and places to see – for a range of budgets.

“Northland will provide a wonderful playground for visitors and teams to explore when they first arrive in New Zealand, between matches, and when they tour after the Series.

“With a stadium and training facilities in the process of being upgraded, Whangarei’s facilities, location and warm hospitality make us the ideal location to host games at this level.

‘Ours is a passionate rugby-loving region, so teams and visiting fans will be welcomed and embraced wholeheartedly.

“RWC2021 promises to be a great tournament – bring it on!” she said.
