Four local acts join Fritter line-up / Four local acts join Fritter line-up

The lineup for the sixth Whangarei Fritter Festival is complete with the addition of four new local acts to join Salmonella Dub, Elemeno P and Strangely Arousing on 10 March at Toll Stadium.

Mermaid Bait, Furious 3, Str8 Up and Kyle Fury will all be playing on the main stage along with the headliners as festival organisers make the change from having two stages to one big one.

“We decided that in 2018 we would have one stage to keep the audience focused on one main space and give the local acts the opportunity to play on the same stage as the headliners” says Whangarei District Council Marketing and Events Team Leader Rachel O’Gorman. “These bands are going to look and sound amazing on the big stage and will really improve the audio-visual aspect of the festival.”

“We are really happy to be able to bring four new acts into the mix. Over the last five years since Fritter Festival began in 2013, we have had 21 different local acts performing in front of crowds of thousands, many of whom are still performing together today. Each year we try to get different acts as there is so much local talent out there and we really want to open up the stage and be as inclusive as possible.”

Mermaid Bait are a Whangarei band that have been playing together for a number of years. Their music is an eclectic mix of genres including rock, blues, reggae, punkrock and slow walz tracks. All of their songs are originals and they are working on their first album. They almost won the 2017 Live Vibes competition at the Butter Factory and supported Hollie Smith on her Water or Gold acoustic gig here in Whangarei. They have also been part of the Company Of Giants play “Honey and Milk” where they entertained the audience before the show and they are all part of Beagle 88.1FM, a local community radio station.

Whangarei based trio, Furious 3 play a range of classic party covers loved by all. A touch of reggae, kiwi favorites, hip hop and soul.

Str8 Up is a six piece dynamic group of highly experienced and talented musicians that play across most genres and pride themselves in providing a highly captivating and entertaining performance every time. The band has an infectious personality that will engage and help to build excitement throughout their performance.

Kyle Fury is a songwriter originally from Vancouver BC Canada who plays reggae/ska music as well as some roots country. Fronting a popular 9 piece ska reggae band called Los Furios, Kyle Fury has toured throughout Canada, USA and Mexico extensively. Married to a Kiwi girl from Whangarei and currently residing here, he spends a lot of his time in New Zealand and plans to expand his audience in the southern hemisphere one show at a time.

Early bird adult tickets are available for $39 each until 17 January or $20 for a child from Eventfinda and Forum North Box office. Groups can buy tickets for $35 each when 10 or more tickets are purchased and bus tickets from Matapouri, Whangarei Heads and Waipu are also available.
